The Absolute Best Outdoor Lawn Games

Lawn Games

If you are planning some outdoor activities for the summer, lawn games can be a great way to pass the time. These games often require a store-bought set, but in some instances, you can make your set at home with the materials you have handy.

But no matter if you choose the store-bought or the homemade route, one thing is for sure; with a lawn game, you are bound to have a lot of fun. Here are some lawn games that stand out as the most enjoyable.

  • I have played these games with children and adults.
  • These games are fun to play.
  • These games are safe to play.

Cornhole is a game that is played by aiming a bean bag at a hole on a slanted board. You earn 3 points by getting the bag in the hole and 1 point if it just hits the board. The player with the most points wins.

This has been a favorite at parties and campuses everywhere. While materials for the board can vary, a smooth surface is required.

Giant Jenga

Giant Jenga is played just like any other game of Jenga which is to say, you and your friends take turns stacking blocks and hoping you aren’t the one who makes the tower fall.

The only difference between giant Jenga and regular Jenga is that giant Jenga is, well, giant. The tower can grow to over five feet tall. Its impressive size makes it the perfect outdoor lawn game.

Spikeball was first introduced on Shark Tank, and since then it has gone on to become one of the hottest lawn games in the nation.

It is quite similar to volleyball except the net is on a low surface placed horizontally between the players and rather than trying to avoid the net, you are trying to hit it.

Teams get on either side of the net and bounce the ball into it. The ball trampolines up to the other team, and it is up to them to spike it in before it hits the floor.

Ladder Toss

For this game, players aim a string with two balls on either end at a ladder. The idea is for the string to successfully wrap around on of the rungs of the ladder. The higher the rung you can hit, the more points you get.

The player to score the most points wins.

You can make your own Ladder Toss game or you can buy your own for pretty cheap on all the major online retailer websites.

Badminton is quite similar to tennis. Players are given rackets that they use to hit a ball back and forth over a net. Players that are able to hit the ball in such a way that their opponents are unable to hit it back score a point.

There are differences in the two games involving how the scoring works. Also, in tennis, the ball is allowed to hit the ground once before a player hits it. In badminton, the ball must be elevated at all times.

KanJam puts an interesting spin on Frisbee.

Each player tosses a Frisbee about as they are positioned directly behind trash cans. If one player is able to get the Frisbee into the top of the can, he wins 3 points. If he gets it into the slot in the front of the can, it’s an instant win. Also, if the ‘catcher’ is able to deflect the Frisbee so it gets in the can, he gets a point.

The first player to get 21 points wins.

Croquet has been around since the 19th century, and there’s a reason behind its staying power.

Goalposts are set up, and players use a mallet to get their balls through these posts. If you are able to hit the ball through the goal post to the wicket that is hammered into the ground behind it, you win.

Kubb is a Swedish import that even predates Croquet.

The object of the game is to throw sticks in an attempt to knock down your opponent’s wooden blocks. The ‘King Block’ must be reserved for last.

Although this sounds simple enough, it can get pretty tricky when you’re left with a limited amount of sticks and the king block is the only one left standing.

Giant Dice

Dice are often thought of as pieces that are used in games to determine things like how many steps a player can advance. But did you know dice can also be their own game?

Also known as ‘craps’ playing with dice can be quite involved as players bet on what numbers another player will roll. Although the game is usually played by betting money, you don’t have to go this route. You can bet favors or hugs to make things more interesting and not as costly, or you can just play for fun.

The fact that these dice are giant makes them perfect for outdoor play.

Bouncing on a trampoline is a form of free play that is a great way to tire out kids and to stay in shape. Get one of these for your lawn for unstructured hours of fun.
